Job Description

House Keepers are assigned to each Academic Building to maintain public/ common areas, to assist in eliminating distractions such as unwanted graffiti, dust/dirt, and unwanted smells from the learning environment and to assist in the protection of the faculty, employees, and student’s health and safety.

Job Duties

CLASSROOMS/LECTURE HALLS/LABORATORIES: These areas are given priority.

Cleans assigned building including, but not limited to the following:


Cleans blackboards and chalk trays Empties pencil sharpeners Empties and cleans waste receptacles and replaces bags as necessary and spot cleans wall surface adjacent to trash container Dusts and mops hard surfaced floors Vacuums carpeted floors Arranges furniture to its original position unless a note indicates it be left as is Reports any damage or vandalism to your House Keeper or supervisor Cleans glass to classroom entrance doors Removes graffiti wherever possible from desk tops Wet mops hard floors as weather and usage conditions dictate (daily during winter months)

Dusts exposed horizontal surfaces such as window sills, empty shelves, door casings, and bottoms of furniture (NOTE: In scientific laboratories, bench tops and hoods are not to be cleaned by House Keeping
Thoroughly wet mops all hard surface floors
Thoroughly vacuums, including all edges of carpeted floors
Changes any burnt out light fixtures
Cleans insides of windows

OFFICES: (NOTE: Personal belongings of office occupant are not handled. If you would like an area cleaned, please make sure personal papers, knickknacks, etc. are cleared from this area. Any confidential papers should be locked in a drawer at the end of the occupant’s day.)
Empties and cleans waste receptacles and replace bags as necessary
Removes any overflow or spills from trash receptacles on surrounding floor area
Cleans glass in doorways if any
Removes any large soil or debris such as mud, stones, etc… with broom and dust pan
Dusts any vacant horizontal surfaces such as shelves, desktops, windowsills, etc.
Vacuums carpeted floors thoroughly
Dry and Wet mops hard surface floors
Cleans insides of windows

Cleans insides of windows
Empties and cleans trash receptacles and replace bags as necessary
Cleans all horizontal surfaces such as table tops, counter tops, etc.
Removes any large soil or debris such as mud, stones, etc… with broom and dust pan
Replaces furniture to original position
Cleans any glass to entrance doors
Dusts areas such as window sills, empty bookshelves, door casings
Vacuums carpeted rooms thoroughly, including edges
Dust mops and Wet mops hard surface floors



Empties trash receptacles, cleans as needed, and replaces bag liners Checks and replaces all paper products such as tissue and hand towels as needed Checks and fills soap dispensers as necessary Cleans and disinfects sinks, toilet seats, and side panels to stall partitions Cleans mirrors Sweeps floors Disinfects and cleans toilet bowls

Thoroughly washes and disinfects floors
Cleans entrance panels to stalls of fingerprints, etc…
Dusts vents and tops of light fixtures
Removes cobwebs behind door casings, etc…

Dusts mop
Wet mops during winter months
Runs automatic floor scrubber/wet mops during rest of season
Checks behind doors for dirt and cobwebs in corners
Night floor crew maintains main hallways once weekly per academic building

Cleans all glass
Sweeps and cleans entrance mats/rugs
Clears snow and ice in winter months
Wet mops floor area
Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Education, Preparation, and Training
High School diploma or GED
At least 1-2 years experience

Requires regular, reliable and predictable work attendance
Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment
Good knowledge of proper chemical storage, use and inventory
Skill in maintenance tools and materials
Willingness to travel to New York locations
Work takes place in Administrative Offices as well as outside venues
