Job Description

Facilitate Learning:

• Conduct small group tutoring sessions in which each student is actively involved in exploring and learning class lecture material.
• Review course concepts, provide alternate explanations, and offer multiple strategies for reviewing and reinforcing information.
• Work through sample problems and questions with students, emphasizing the process of learning rather than the product.
• Encourage students to do most of the talking and writing in the tutoring sessions; give students an opportunity to articulate what they know, to explain concepts to the tutor (or to other students in the session), and to formulate questions about the material.
• Offer effective organization and study strategies and refer students to outside resources if they need additional help with note taking, reading comprehension, test preparation and test taking, time management or study skills.
• Assist students to identify resources and to develop problem-solving strategies that they can apply to other learning situations.

Act as a Liaison Between Students and Professors

• Communicate with course professors and know the professors’ expectations for students.
• Ask professors for lists of assignments, quizzes or take home tests.
• Request a copy of each course textbook from the professor if a copy is not already available.
• Consult with course professors throughout the semester to discuss student assignments, expectations, and questions about the courses.
• Ask professors to add your name to their Blackboard courses.
• Encourage students to meet with their professors to discuss course content and their progress in the courses.
• If necessary, help students to formulate a list of questions to address to each professor.
• Record detailed, objective summaries of each tutoring session.
• Take attendance at each tutoring session and send the list to professors via e-mail.

Demonstrate Professional and Ethical Behavior

• Report to each tutoring session on time and avoid cancelling appointments. Notify the course professor immediately if you will be late or unable to keep a scheduled appointment with students. In the event of a needed cancellation, contact the students and reschedule their tutoring session.
• Maintain a consistent tutoring schedule for the duration of the semester. Do not make drastic changes to the schedule without first consulting with the Chairperson/Director of the Department of Nursing.
• Establish appropriate physical, emotional, and social boundaries with the students. Notify the Chairperson/Director immediately of any problems.
• Respond to students within the limits of your position, training, and expertise. Tutors are not expected to re-lecture course material, to complete students’ homework for them, to suggest a grade for an assignment discussed in the tutoring sessions, or to engage in negative discussion about a professor’s teaching methods, grading policies, assignments, or personality.
• Model successful student behavior when questions arise that you are not able to answer. Help students to identify other sources of information about the topic,
(course instructor, textbook, other students or tutors).
• Straighten up your work area at the conclusion of each tutoring session: wipe down whiteboards and tables, turn off the overhead projector, throw away trash, and return any borrowed materials to their appropriate places.
• Dress appropriately for all tutoring sessions .
• If terminating the tutoring position, provide at least two (2) weeks notice to the Chairperson/Director of the Department of Nursing.

Job Duties

Fulfill Administrative Responsibilities

• Record tutoring hours on a timesheet every Friday and submit the timesheet to the Administrative Assistant every Friday. Failure to submit completed timesheets by the end of the pay period may result in late payment.
• Review the course syllabus and weekly lecture content prior to tutoring sessions.
• Submit summaries of material covered during tutoring sessions to professors.
• Keep accurate records of actual tutoring time and student attendance at sessions.

Required Qualifications

Education, Preparation, and Training

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college preferred
• RN license

Computer Skills

• Proficient in Word, Excel and Power Point

Qualifications

• Have a cumulative college GPA of 3.0.
• Have earned a grade of “A” in each nursing course in which students will be tutored.
• Have written approval from the nursing course professor, or have departmental recommendations.
• Provide at least two (2) completed and signed recommendation forms from faculty members.
