Job Description

The Director of the Library is responsible for planning and administering the budget, staff, facilities, collections, and services of the Jay Sexter Library to support the academic, clinical, research, and community services mission of Touro University Nevada. The Jay Sexter Library supports all programs at Touro University Nevada which include the College of Osteopathic Medicine (offering Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences degrees) and the College of Health and Human Services (offering graduate degrees in Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Education).

Job Duties

1. Develop and implement the library’s strategic plan in concert with the University’s overall strategic plan.

2. Develop the library budget.
2.1. Direct expenditures from the library budget

3. Develop the collection of library resources.
3.1. Acquire new resources in all formats, including, but not limited to, electronic resources, books, journals, and media.
3.2. Participate in the negotiate of contracts for acquisition of resources.

4. Hire, train and evaluate professional librarians and para-professional staff and student workers.

5. Meet and maintain accreditations standards pertaining to the library.

6. Write reports and prepare documentation for program accreditation and site visits.

7. Participate in the development of new University programs.
8. Maintain statistics on the utilization of the library and its resources.

9. Develop, implement, review, and update library policies and procedures.

10. Oversee the physical environment of the library, including participation in space planning for the library.

11. Oversee the library’s online presence, including its website and online finding tools.
11.1 Evaluate and adopt new online services, including mobile services that enhance the library’s functionality and usability.

12. Direct the day-to-day activities of the library.

13. Supervise all functions of the library, including circulation, cataloging, materials processing, serials maintenance, interlibrary loan/document deliver, and reference services.
13.1 Oversee and conduct online literature searches for faculty and staff.
13.2 Oversee the presentation of instruction on information literacy skills, including the ability to identify, locate and analyze information in a variety of formats both print and electronic.
13.3 Oversee the orientation process for new library users – faculty, staff and students – whether on-ground or online so they can utilize the library effectively.

14. Serve on faculty and institutional committees.

15. Collaborate with other libraries in the Touro College and University System.

16. Participate in professional activities and contribute to the Library profession.

17. Comply with state and federal laws, including copyright and confidentiality.

Required Qualifications

Education:
Master’s Degree with Library endorsement. Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school preferred.

Experience:
Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience with MLS or MLIS degree or 10 years relevant work experience with Library endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications

Skills and Abilities:

Strong knowledge of the medical and health sciences literature across a broad spectrum including osteopathy, physician assistant, public health, nursing, pharmacology, etc.

Solid working knowledge of the biological sciences, education, legal, and business literature.

Comprehensive library operations including reference, cataloging, serials control, inter-library loan/document delivery, technology, bibliographic instruction, etc.

Knowledge of healthcare, the healthcare system and an understanding of the medical education process.

Working knowledge of the laws governing information access, copyright, communication and archiving.

Participate in professional activities.

Strong interpersonal skills and the enthusiasm and motivation to contribute to the growth and development of the Medical Library at this University

Physical Demands

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
• This position requires the individual to work in a variety of settings including office, classroom training environment and campus academic division/department offices
• This is a typical office environment with long periods of sitting working at a PC and occasionally required to stand, walk, bend and reach.
• Ability to lift and move up to 10 lbs.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

We will be accepting internal candidates only from September 5th through September 11th; both internal and external candidates will be considered beginning September 12th until the position is filled.
