Job Description

The Health Center Support Specialist is responsible for various duties within the clinic which includes; billing practices, electronic health record support, and front office duties. Under general supervision, the Health Center Support Specialist will be able to assist fellow colleagues with daily work functions within various departments in professional and timely manner.

The Health Center Support Specialist responsibilities will include; daily posting of billing charges, handling various billing requests, address patient matters, assist the Clinical Support Specialist with electronic health record projects, and help with front office duties on a periodic basis when employees are on vacation or a leave of absence. Other responsibilities may include; assist in making recommendations and/or improvements within the clinic, help management with various projects, and address various patient billing complaints or inquiries.

Job Duties

1. Evaluates medical record documentation & charge ticket coding to optimize reimbursement by:
1.1. Ensuring that diagnostic and procedural codes and other documentation accurately reflect and support the outpatient visit.
1.2. Ensuring that data comply with legal standards and guidelines.
1.3. Interpreting medical information such as diseases or symptoms, diagnostic descriptions and procedures for a given visit in order to accurately assign and sequence the correct ICD-9-CM and CPT codes.
1.4. Reviewing Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement claims before submission for completeness and accuracy and to minimize claim denial.
1.5. Making recommendations for changes in policies and procedures;
1.6. Assisting data processing staff in making revisions to the computer master file as required
1.7. Assisting Clinical Support Specialist and management with any electronical health record or billing matters.

2. Provides technical guidance to physicians with the Support of the Clinic Support Specialist and other departmental staff in identifying and resolving issues or errors (such as incomplete or missing records and documentation, ambiguous or nonspecific documentation, or codes that do not conform to approved coding principles/guidelines) and educates and advises staff on proper code selection, documentation, procedures, and requirements.
2.1. Reviews bulletins, newsletters, and periodicals, and attends workshops/seminars to
stay abreast of current issues, trends, and changes in the laws and regulations governing medical record coding and documentation.

3. Under general supervision, computes billing charges and collects patient accounts; and performs related duties as required.
3.1. Serves as liaison between the providers of health care services, the patient, or other responsible persons, and revenue sources, to ensure the correctness of charges, a current record of all transactions, and account resolution.
3.2. Maintains active communication with our outsourcing billing company (Allscripts) on a consistent basis to ensure all billing inquiries and handled appropriately.
3.3. Verifies health care charges against established rates for diagnosis, treatment, services, and supplies.

4. Front office duties.
4.1. Perform and assist with front office staff duties when various employees are on vacation, sick or on maternity/personal leave.

Required Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and/or Education Preferred.
Coding and/or Billing Certification Preferred, but not required.
High School Diploma or G.E.D Required.

Experience:
Minimum 2-3 years in medical billing/collections
ICD-9-CM and CPT coding guidelines;
Accounts and Receivables knowledge;
Medical terminology
Commercial insurance reimbursement guidelines.
Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement guidelines.
Knowledge of front office responsibilities.
Strong customer service experience.

Physical Demands

This position requires the individual to work in a variety of settings including health center offices.
This is a typical healthcare/office environment with long periods of sitting and standing, working at a PC and requires the ability to stand, walk, bend and reach.
Ability to lift and move up to 10 lbs.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

Only internal applicants will be considered from August 30th through September 6th. Both internal and external applicants will be considered beginning September 7th until the position is filled.
