Job Description

Develop learning strategies and solutions for adult learners in undergraduate and graduate professional programs in three colleges: College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Education and Health Sciences. The Learning Specialist works directly with students who are challenged by their coursework, testing, and board exams and provides remedial assistance to understand and overcome their deficits. Students self-refer and are referred by faculty. In addition to one-on-one advising, the Learning Specialist delivers workshops on learning strategies, study skills, test-taking skills, time management and other topics related to learning outcomes. Touro has a peer tutoring and note taking program that is managed by the Learning Specialist. Additionally, this person is responsible for reviewing all requests for accommodations that are submitted by students and ensuring that approved accommodations are implemented and maintained throughout the students’ time at Touro.

Job Duties

• Direct Academic Support Services
• Coordinate and supervise after hours Study Hall
• Supervise student Peer Tutors and Study Hall Monitors; assist Director of Campus Activities with setting up, and monitoring student workers for Late Night Study events
• Coordinate peer tutoring program and provide orientation and training
• Assess student learning styles, study skills and test-taking skills
• Develop individualized learning strategies
• Monitor student academic progress directly with students and colleges
• Incorporate findings for annual evaluation for continuous improvements
• Review requests for accommodations and consult with the Associate Dean of Student Services to determine eligibility
• Determine appropriate accommodations based on eligibility and regulations
• Maintain case files for all students receiving academic services
• Work with faculty and staff to implement accommodations and ensure that confidentiality is maintained

Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATION: is the Education, Training and/or related experience needed by the person to perform the job.

• Master’s degree with a concentration in the field of adult learning
• Four years of experience in adult learning and assessment of learning deficits
• A record of success with assisting adult learners to improve their study effectiveness, time management skills, and testing abilities
• Possess excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and customer service skills
• Work cooperatively and productively with individuals and groups

• Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to communicate complex material to small and large groups
• Excellent problem solving; analytical skills
• Must have ability to produce standard service assessments; and produce end of year program review
• Must possess standard Microsoft Office Suite computer skills
• Must have capability to work in an integrated database environment
