Job Description

Standardized Patients play an important role in the education of our osteopathic medical students. A Standardized Patient (SP) is a person who plays the role of a patient for the purposes of teaching and/or testing students. The use of SP’s helps to develop and assess our students’ clinical and interpersonal skills.

Job Duties

The SP role
• You will be playing the role of a “patient”.
• In your role as a ’’patient," you will be Interviewed and/or examined by a medical student.
• Each of the SP-Student encounters will be observed and evaluated by a TouroCOM physician faculty member.
• Prior to your encounter with the student, you will be provided with a description of the patient that you will portray and a script that you must follow during the encounter. ·
o You will be expected to remain “in character” at all times when interacting with the students during the OSCE encounter.
o No personal information should be used during the encounter.
• You may be asked to evaluate the student using an evaluation form.
• While the term “patient” is used, there is no intent to provide medical care or to establish a health care provider-patient relationship as a result of your participation. Your regular medical treatment will not be affected in any way by participating in the SP program. Participation as a SP should in no way be viewed as receiving medical care.
• Any diagnosis or assessments made by the students should in no way be viewed as true or medical information.

Required Qualifications

• All training and case scenarios are confidential.
• You may not discuss, duplicate or distribute to any other individual or institution any training or assessment materials you receive. Copies of SP materials given to you must be kept secure and returned TouroCOM upon request.
• The content of any SP exercise should be discussed only with the OSCE course Coordinators or Director.
• You must keep all student, faculty, and staff information confidential.

Observation and Audio Videotaping
• When playing the role of a SP, you may be observed directly, photographed, audiotaped, or videotaped while performing as a SP.
