Job Description

The EH&S Technician plays a key role in supporting New York Medical College’s comprehensive energy, environmental, safety, and research compliance programs for the entire NYMC campus. Reporting to the Associate Director, this position assists with the coordination and execution of research and laboratory safety and compliance initiatives, and participates in various other aspects of NYMC’s EEH&S programs.

Job Duties

1. Day-to-day support of the radiation safety program
2. Conducting safety training for faculty, staff, and students on a regular basis, as well as assisting in the development of new training modules
3. Assisting in the management of records and documentation, including training records, waste manifests, SDS, safety equipment certifications, chemical inventories, and lab signage
4. Laboratory safety program support, including support for the Biosafety Level 3 laboratory program
5. Conduct worksite inspections, audits, investigations for various compliance programs. May help with creating or preparing checklists for the compliance inspections. Help with identifying potential risks and with recommending appropriate solutions and ensuring that corrective actions have been implemented.
6. Rotating in departmental emergency/off-hours “on-call” schedule.

Required Qualifications

(A) Education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree

(B) Licenses or certifications: N/A

© Technical/computer skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Must be able to use iPad/iPhone applications.

(D) Prior experience: Preferably 1+ year work experience in environmental health & safety field (e.g. biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety) in a college or university setting. Experience and a high degree of comfort with public speaking is mandatory.

(E.) Other skills/requirements: Must be able to obtain FBI clearance for Select Agent Program approval, as well as pass institutional suitability requirements for Tier 1 program. Must be extremely detail-oriented and be capable of communicating complex technical issues to a diverse clientele. Must possess excellent time management skills and be capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing a range of tasks and responsibilities. Must have a valid driver’s license, and be able to respond to matters of urgency, sometimes after normal working hours.

Physical Demands

Physical: Must be able to wear a respirator. Must be able to pass occupational health requirements for BSL-3 laboratory access. Must be able to lift 50lbs and climb stairs/ladders. Duties involve considerable amounts of walking.

Environmental: Individual will access laboratories that contain chemical, biological and radiological hazards, as well as vivarium space. Position requires access spaces that are not meant for continuous occupancy (e.g. basements, crawlspaces, etc.)
