Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Maintenance and Engineering, the Electrician A is responsible for testing, repairing, installing and/or maintaining various types of electrical systems and equipment; troubleshooting electrical equipment; maintaining adequate inventory of equipment and materials; determining materials and/or equipment necessary for a job and on-the-job procedure changes; and performing all related work as required in accordance with NEC and all relevant safety regulations.

Job Duties

1. Installs, maintains, and repairs building electrical distribution systems, building and outside lighting systems, variable frequency drives, building safety equipment, motor control centers (including, but not limited to, fans, pumps, and motors). Responds to electrical trouble calls throughout the facility. Performs load analysis and may install new distribution systems which include equipment such as transformers and circuit interrupters. Works with an outside contractor on equipment as required.

2. Regularly inspects and performs routine, preventive maintenance, inspections for all electrical systems (including low voltage with the exception of IT/data). Installs new circuits and distribution panels as required for new equipment and systems. Observes operating conditions and makes necessary adjustments and/or repairs; reports abnormalities to management. Troubleshoots malfunctioning/faculty electrical equipment and systems by using necessary equipment and reading plans, schematics and/or diagrams and to identify and correct operational problems.

3. Perform emergency repairs to restore service, protect persons and limit damages to buildings and equipment. Notify the appropriate manager of solutions to initial trouble calls and report problems requiring additional repairs to management.

4. Complete department work orders and daily work sheets in a timely manner including needed repair parts and orders. Comply with all OSHA, EPA and NYMC Environmental Health & Safety policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, the use personal protective equipment.

5. Participates on snow removal team upon request of the Director or Associate Director. Carries out other duties as assigned by his/her Supervisor to support the needs of NYMC/campus operations.

Required Qualifications

Prior Experience: Seven or more (7+) years of relevant experience, preferably in an industrial or hospital/research environment. Must be able to work from blueprints, specifications, wiring diagrams, and schematics/sketches. Strong working knowledge of the National Electric Code and/or NYS electrical codes as well as NFPA is essential. Must possess sufficient knowledge to handle assignments of routine and non-routine difficulty with minimal supervision.

Education Requirement: A high school diploma or equivalent GED certification is required.

(B) Licenses or Certifications: Electrical Journeyman or Electrical Contractors License

© Technical/Computer Skills: Must have knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office computer programs, including Word and Outlook, as well as utilizing internet applications. Familiarity with mobile devices such as iPad for daily work assignments and reporting is strongly preferred. Must be able to follow verbal and written directives given in English and possess good communication skills and possess the ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively and in a courteous manner.

Physical Demands

Physical & Environmental Demands: Extensive walking to and from various buildings on campus. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Work is performed both inside and outside, under various types of weather conditions. Certain working conditions may be wet, as well as hot or cold. Work in spaces that may contain physical and noise hazards. The individual will be required, on occasions, to adjust and respond to an emergency, requiring work to be stopped on a current project, to address the emergency elsewhere. The individual may be required on occasions to work during off hours, including weekends, and holidays, with as much notice given as possible.
